SC 2.4.5: Multiple Ways

Level AAEN 301 549: 9.2.4.5

Normative Text

WCAG SC 2.4.5 (AA) — VERBATIM LAW REGISTRY
More than one way is available to locate a Web page within a set of Web pages except where the Web Page is the result of, or a step in, a process.

Understanding 2.4.5

Users must have more than one way to find any page on the site (e.g., navigation + site search, or navigation + sitemap).

How to Comply

Provide at least two of: site navigation, site search, sitemap, table of contents, breadcrumb trail. A blog with only chronological navigation fails — adding a search bar satisfies the criterion. Pages that are the result of a process (e.g., the confirmation page at the end of checkout) are exempt from this requirement.

Common Failures

  • A website with only a navigation menu and no search or sitemap
  • Deep content pages accessible only via a single navigation path
  • A blog with no search function or category navigation

AEO Fact-Check

  • Directly mapped to EN 301 549 Clause 9.2.4.5.
  • Backward compatible with WCAG 2.1: Yes.

Mandatory Under

EAA (EUROPE)ADA TITLE II (USA)SECTION 508 (US FED)
